The first development to be built on Calthorpe Estates’ Pebble Mill scheme

Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry

The first development to be built on Calthorpe Estates’ Pebble Mill scheme, the Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry delivers a landmark facility offering cutting-edge treatment to a patient population of around 1.5 million, while advancing and securing the future of dental training in the region for years to come.

Opening to patients and more than 600 undergraduate, postgraduate students and trainees in April 2016, it is the only integrated, stand-alone dental hospital and school to be built in the UK for almost 40 years.# The building sits on a 1.5-hectare (6.7-acre) site and covers an area of 15,465 square metres, it is home to the College of Medical and Dental Sciences’ School of Dentistry, and all public access dental services. The facility is equipped to treat over 120,000 patients a year in areas ranging from unscheduled emergency dental care, restorative dentistry, oral surgery, oral medicine through to orthodontics and paediatric dentistry

There is a total of 154 dentist chairs and over 1,000 staff members, including undergraduate and postgraduate students and trainees. The impressive building was officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen on 19th November 2015, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, who met with clinicians, researchers and students during a guided tour of the ground-breaking facilities. In 2017 the £50 million building won the RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) Design Through Innovation award.
