Grand opening of Pebble Mill Care Home

15 June 2018

A £12 million care home on the iconic former BBC site, within Edgbaston Medical Quarter on the Calthorpe Estates, has celebrated its grand opening.

Pebble Mill Bupa Care Home welcomed the local community and friends and family of residents to join them to mark the official opening.

There was live music from the talented Steel Drum Bands and an afternoon tea party with cream tea refreshments. The home was opened by local Edgbaston MP, Preet Kaur Gill.

The purpose-built 62-bed home in Edgbaston provides the latest in modern care with luxury facilities such as a landscaped garden, pizza oven and beauty salon. It features 26 nursing rooms, 26 rooms for people living with dementia, and ten residential rooms all with ensuite bathrooms.

Located within Pebble Mill, a world-class destination for healthcare and medical sciences, it is already home to Birmingham Dental Hospital & School of Dentistry and will soon be joined by Circle Health private hospital (opening Spring 2019).

Pebble Mill’s first resident, 82 year-old Ronald Davies, had a special surprise from carer Andrew Wallace who brought along his keyboard to treat the guests to some Frank Sinatra songs. Ron, a Sinatra fan, joined in for an enthusiastic sing-along to an appreciative audience of residents, family and guests.

Gareth Richards, general manager at Pebble Mill Bupa Care home, in Mill Pool Way, said,

“Our first few weeks open have been fantastic, as having residents move in really brings the place to life. We look forward to continuing to welcome residents and would encourage anyone considering care options to come in for a chat and a tour. We’re very proud of our facilities and love showing people around!”

Ralph Minott, Development Director at Calthorpe Estates, added;

“We are delighted to welcome Bupa care home onto Pebble Mill and the Calthorpe Estate. Pebble Mill is located within Edgbaston Medical Quarter, which is home to a thriving community of world-class healthcare and life sciences organisations. The Care Home is the second building to open on the redeveloped 27-acre site. It is at an exciting stage, where people can now appreciate the value and benefit of having a strong cluster of leading healthcare operators and world-class centres of excellence in the region. It has taken over 12 years to reach this stage, and we are pleased to see our vision for Pebble Mill coming to fruition with Bupa, a renowned care home provider, choosing to locate within our site.”

Pebble Mill was the complex owned by the BBC and was famous for being the home of Midlands Today, BBC WM and where programmes produced included The Archers, Top Gear and Gardeners’ World.
